On Friday 27 September, during the opening ceremony of the ESMO conference, Dr Angelo Di Leo will be honoured with the ESMO Lifetime Achievement Award.

This award is given to acknowledge outstanding lifetime achievements in oncology and to recognize research by individuals, that demonstrate commitment to clinical cancer research and education.

With a career spanning over three decades, Dr Angelo Di Leo has been dedicated to the treatment and research of breast cancer. He has coordinated several international, pivotal phase III trials in new adjuvant therapies, and has been deeply involved in the evaluation of molecular markers with potential predictive value for breast cancer. He also developed the medical oncology department at the Hospital of Prato, Istituto Toscano Tumori, Italy, transforming it into a leading national center for the treatment of cancer.

A firm believer in the value of independent academic research and international collaboration, Dr Di Leo has been active in the Breast International Group since the beginning and is a member of BIG’s Executive Board.  

During the opening ceremony he will present a keynote lecture entitled “Adjuvant therapy of breast cancer: Targeting tumour biology may not be enough”.
